| TANDIL, ORIGIN OF THE WORD |
There are always many versions with regard to the origin of very old things and the name Tandil is no exception. The most well known story tells that the origin was taken from the name of an Indian chief who lived in the region. However, another story tells of a river which had that name before the chief.
Others have carried out studies of the “mapuche” or “araucano” terms, in which the “LIL” could be interpreted as a distortion of ”DIL”, in reference to a rock or stone. It is said that “TAN” derives from “THAUN”, which coincidentally means “to beat”. According to these analysts TANDIL means "rock that beats", obviously referring to the legendary rock (La Piedra Movediza). |
